The best cafes in Bath, England

I believe that the best way to get to know a city is to visit all the cafes. I love a good coffee shop where I can sit in a cosy corner, reading and drinking a tasty flat white. Since moving to Bath a few weeks ago, I have made it my mission to try all of the local, independent cafes. Here is my list of the best cafes in Bath, England.

Cafe au Lait

12-14 Dorchester St, Bath BA1 1SS

Cafe au Lait is the ultimate Bath cafe for a weekend brunch with the girls. They do an extensive food menu, including classic Full English Breakfasts, mashed avocado toasts, and the fluffiest American-style pancakes you’ve ever seen in your life. Although they are a more food-oriented cafe, you can still go for a coffee and enjoy the buzzing cafe vibe. They serve great Clifton Coffee, and also do specialty drinks such as matcha lattes, affogato, smoothies and milkshakes. They also do a wide range of gluten free and vegan options. It’s one of Bath’s hidden gems. And don’t get me started about their bottomless brunches….

Colonna and Smalls

6 Chapel Row, Bath BA1 1HT

Awarded the Best Coffee Shop in Europe in 2016, Colonna and Smalls is a must-visit destination in Bath for coffee lovers. Inspired by the Third Wave Coffee movement in Melbourne, Australia, Colonna and Smalls pride themselves in their great coffee. In 2015, they opened their very own roastery.

Visiting the shop on Chapel Row, you have the option to choose your own roast of espresso to be used in your drink. Alongside their menu, they have a changing line-up of espresso for you to choose from. And if you can’t decide, the staff are happy to help. Along with great coffee, the Chapel Row location is the definition of a cosy cafe. It is the ultimate place to visit on a rainy day with a book. Colonna and Smalls have also recently opened a smaller outdoor shop on Trim Street for all your quick takeaway needs. It is definitely one of (if not the) best cafes in Bath.

Mjölk

13 Abbey Churchyard, Bath BA1 1LY

Located right across from the Roman Baths and next to the Abbey, Mjölk is the perfect place to take a break whilst visiting Bath’s tourist attractions. This family run Nordic cafe was opened in 2020 and has already become a huge hit amongst both locals and tourists in the city. It is one of the best cafes in Bath, no doubt. They serve great Clifton Coffee, lunches, pastries, and wines and beers. Their large outdoor seating area is fantastic in the summer months, as you can enjoy the street performances in the Abbey churchyard and marvel at the beautiful Bath architecture whilst enjoying your food.

Cortado Cafe

7 Bridge St, Bath BA2 4AS

Right next to the beautiful Pulteney bridge, Cortado is a great independent cafe. Opened by a British-Argentinian couple, Cortado is passionate about sustainability and local suppliers. They serve brunch, lunch, and authentic Argentinian empanadas. It’s a small and cosy cafe– a great place to relax after a day of walking around Bath.

Wild Cafe

10a Queen St, Bath BA1 1HE

Wild Cafe is another great place to grab breakfast or brunch on the weekends. However, it is so popular that sometimes it can be hard to get a table. Situated on beautiful Queen street, this cafe has a very cool interior and exterior. One of my go-to places for catch up with friends and some great food. Definitely one of Bath’s best cafes.

Good Day Cafe

12 Upper Borough Walls, Bath BA1 1RH

Good Day Cafe is the place to go to satisfy your sweet tooth. Known for their brownies, cookies, and cakes, Good Day is always coming out with new treats to try. But if you aren’t into that kind of snack, Good Day also does brunches and coffees. It is a beautiful cafe, with an impressive flowery exterior. Located right in the city centre and by the shopping quarter, it is a fantastic cafe to visit.

Bath, England is a great place to visit at any time of year. When you’re exploring the city and seeing all it has to offer, try visiting some of these cafes. They are undoubtedly the best cafes in Bath.
